Churning or Rapid Transfer

If you’re looking for an ISP, you need to consider speed, monthly costs and installation fees. You should also check if the ISP supports Churning / Rapid Transfer. Churning allows you to switch providers automatically, with minimal downtime (sometimes as little as one hour).

You might want to change ISPs because your existing provider is not fulfilling the speeds or customer service they promised, or the lure of a lower price from a competitor could make a decision very easy.

If you move house, this may mean you inevitably need to change, and you may even want to swap due to technological improvements, such as wanting to be hooked up to Telstra Next G or a similar service.

Avoid extra costs

The competitive market is a problem for ISPs due to the costly nature of hardware and installation fees. They often get you interested in the first place by waiving these fees, so it’s natural they don’t want to lose you soon after. Therefore, most ISPs will charge you between $100 and $200 if you switch to another ISP.

When you choose an ISP, avoid fees down the track by checking to see if they support Rapid Transfer. This means you can change to another ISP (as long as they also support Rapid Transfer), for a fraction of the price – usually below $50. Sometimes you can churn to an ISP for free - this is a sweetener to get you in.

After you’ve made the switch to your new Internet provider, you must remember to pay any outstanding bills to your old ISP.
