Cable Internet: the pros and cons

Hooked up via a cable similar to those used for digital TV, cable Internet is one of the fastest and most convenient connections available. While other modems use a telephone line to send and receive data, cable Internet uses a coaxial cable, which is run into the home and connected to a cable modem.

Advantages of cable Internet: high-speed connection and data transfer rate, online gaming and value

  • The fact that cable Internet doesn't require a phone line means that you always have a ready connection; there is no dialing for that connection, there is no dial-up fee and you can stay connected at all times without being cut off by incoming calls
  • Cable Internet is substantially faster than other connections such as dial-up, wireless and ADSL and on a typical plan can achieve speeds of up to ten megabits per second (mbit/s). This means that you can transfer data such as photos, music and video at the highest possible speed
  • Cable Internet supports data-heavy activities such as online gaming, so your playing experience will be of higher quality
  • Because cable is so much faster you will spend less time online and get the most value out of your designated usage hours
  • Cable Internet is not as susceptible to drop out as dial-up connections are.

Disadvantages of cable Internet: connection cost and location

  • Cable Internet does not always operate at the highest possible speed; it depends on how many people in your area are connected at the same time. If you are online during peak hours your connection may run significantly slower
Initial connection can be expensive, as you have to install a coaxial cable
Due to the above reason, cable is not a good idea for renters; sticking to ADSL broadband is probably a better idea
Not all areas can access cable Internet
Cable may be a wasted expense for those who do not use the internet regularly.

Connecting to cable Internet: plans, prices and modems

It is best to purchase cable modems from your internet service provider (ISP) as they can help determine which is suitable for your system. Some areas cannot get cable access and you should check first with your ISP to see if you are in a serviceable area. Cable modems are expensive; to avoid financial loss do not purchase one until you check that it will work both with your system and in your area.

Most major ISPs in Australia have cable plans available and the price will depend on the level of coverage and speed that you want. Optus and Bigpond currently have several monthly plan options available for cable broadband. Prices range from as low as $19.95 per month for basic plans, to more than $59.95 per month for more advanced plans. Most plans exclude the cost of the actual cable modem.
