DSL: How does it differ from cable?
Today, there are several options that allow you to access the Internet. Two flagship Internet connections are DSL and cable. Both have had their fair share of limelight, but which is better? If you're seeking an Internet connection very soon, you should really weigh up all options and establish which will provide you with the precise services you're after. If you've whittled it down to ADSL/ADSL2+ or cable, let's look at them specifically in gritty detail.
Advantages of DSL broadband
A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) will give you fast Internet service without you having to have a cable modem and is especially useful in areas that don't have cable lines installed. The other advantages of DSL are:
- Convenience
- Super fast speed
- Big data usage limit
DSL allows you to stay connected to the Internet all the time and has several technical advantages - especially when compared to Internet access via dial-up. DSL also eliminates the need for a second telephone, as DSL allows you to use your phone while on the Internet. However, it should be noted though that DSL is not available for all telephone services as some areas cannot support DSL services. Use our handy broadband availability check tool to see if you are near to a DSL-enabled exchange.
Cable modem advantages
Cable modems use the same connection as pay TV and as a result, cable is only available in areas that have pay TV access. Cable modems give you Internet that is very fast, however the speed can vary depending on how many people in your area are accessing the network at that time. Like DSL, the cable connection also allows you to use your telephone while on the internet.
Cable and DSL both offer strong, powerful services, but first check which is available to you. If both are, check plans on offer and, after assessing what your monthly needs are, opt for the plan that offers the best in terms of speed, data usage and (most importantly) price.
