Naked DSL: Buying Guide

Naked DSL is the latest innovation to make your life easier. If you love using the internet, but hate paying costly telephone line rental, Naked DSL could be the answer. Naked DSL does away with line rental and allows you to access broadband internet, as well as to make phone calls through your 'net connection, potentially saving you a lot of money. Not all ISP's (Internet Service Providers) can currently connect you up to Naked DSL, so it does pay to take some time and research the most suitable plan for your needs.

Can I connect to Naked DSL?

Not everyone can currently connect to Naked DSL. It's a relatively new service and connections rely on your location and whether or not your ISP has the hardware in place to support the connection. If you are in a remote or rural location, you may find it hard to access Naked DSL. On the other hand, city dwellers should be able to hook up immediately.

Choosing the right Naked DSL provider

It pays to take your time and research your Naked DSL provider. Here are some things to look for:

  • Most Naked DSL plans run at ADSL2+ speeds - fast! While many providers advertise download speeds of up to 24mbit/s (megabit/second), in reality many customers achieve speeds of 6 - 10 mbit/s
  • By choosing Naked DSL, you are losing your landline phone, so VoIP (voice over IP) may be important
  • Check what extras your ISP will bundle into your plan. These may include multiple email accounts, webspace data, bonus dial up accounts and unmetered content that is not counted towards your download quota (great for gamers!)
  • Check out customer reviews. Are other customers happy? Are they actually receiving everything they expect?
  • What is the customer and tech support like? Good support can make a vast difference in times of trouble!
  • Avoid plans that charge extra once you go over your download limit. Most providers will drop your connection speed to near dial up once your quota is reached
  • Your chosen ISP will have a range of plans for light, medium and heavy use, offering you the chance to select the one that is most suitable for your needs

Buying Naked DSL

Signing up for a Naked DSL plan may seem daunting, and the monthly costs initially seem higher than other ADSL plans. When you consider the savings you'll make simply by not paying line rental though, Naked DSL looks far more attractive, generally offering great value for money. With most providers offering free calls, free extras, superfast download and upload speeds and reasonable charges, Standard DSL simply can't compete.
