Naked DSL explained

Naked DSL (NDSL) is just technical-speak for the absence of a telephone service connection to your digital subscriber line (DSL). The main advantage of NDSL is that you don't need to have an active landline.

NDSL works as existing ADSL does. You can utilise your existing home phone sockets and you get high-speed access to the internet. Basically it's one of the next generation broadband options even though the technology has been possible since 1999.

ADSL2+ is a service that you can have without the phone line rental charges, with Naked DSL you can still have very fast internet but you also have added features such as:

• No cost of having a phone service on your telephone line
• Using your mobile phone or VoIP service to make your phone calls
• No monthly telephone line rental
• Cheap phone calls at any time via VoIP

This is made possible because a section of the cable from the switch to the splitter is actually removed, which also takes out the dial tone. A lot of people have already discovered the advantages of NDSL broadband and as the major telecommunications companies move into this technology, many more will be able to access it. It is definitely a cheaper broadband option.

How to get Naked DSL

Whether or not you can get Naked DSL depends on where you live and whether internet providers operating in your area offer NDSL. If one of them has connected their own Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) to your nearest Telstra telephone exchange then you should have a fairly good chance of getting connected to NDSL.

You will still need to have a phone line in order to access NDSL. The first thing to do is check with your telephone company as they may already have NDSL up and running in your local area. It's a great option if you can access it as it delivers fast, cheap, high quality internet.
