    About VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol, better known as VoIP, is simply the transmission of phone calls over your Internet connection (hence "voice over Internet"). More technically, VoIP systems use audio codecs to encode speech, which allows for streamed transmission as digital audio over an IP network. Some networks transmit narrowband compressed speech, others implement high fidelity stereo codecs.

Skype is one of the better known VoIP services, although most Telco's now also provide services for phone calls via your Internet connection, to conveniently supply Internet and phone calls in one package. You might also hear VoIP referred to by other names including IP telephony, broadband telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), and, simplifying things slightly, broadband phone.
