Telstra announces double wireless broadband speed with Telstra Ultimate USB
Telco giant Telstra has announced the release of a new service providing data speeds up to double those currently available with a 3G modem. The Telstra Ultimate USB mobile broadband device will allow customers to download files and view media at considerably improved speeds over the Next G network.
Telstra CEO David Thodey announced the development in a speech to community leaders in Albury at the Telstra Country Wide tenth anniversary celebration. Telstra Country Wide is Telstra’s dedicated service for those in regional and rural Australia. A release date is yet to be announced for the Telstra Ultimate USB, but Bathurst, Broome, Alice Springs, Albury-Wodonga, Gladstone and Launceston are the first locations scheduled to receive the updated service.
"Telstra will make this new technology available in 100 selected regional towns and cities at the same time as many capital cities, underlining our commitment to provide the best technology to Australians no matter where they live," Thodey said.
With Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) due soon, bringing lighting fast fibre optics to the home, it’s hard to see whether improvements to wireless broadband – even ones as significant as this – will have the desired impact. The NBN is sure to crank up expectations several notches, so the Telstra Ultimate USB will certainly need to deliver.
