Mobile broadband: the basics

Mobile broadband is a form of wireless Internet access. It connects via third generation (3G) networks, or GPRS when not in a broadband serviceable area.

Broadband is the name given to any service that transmits data at more than 200 kilobits per second (kbit/s).

The benefits of going broadband

It permits users to work at broadband speed through a mobile device (mobile phone or laptop). The average speed offered by providers is 550 kbit/s to 1.5 megabits per second (mbit/s), so users can connect, browse, receive and send data at an accelerated rate from almost anywhere.

The type of handset required depends on which model is compatible with the network and which ones your provider stocks. Optus and Telstra provide a wide range of mobile broadband conducive handsets including the latest from both Motorola and Nokia. Handsets must have broadband capabilities and support heavy bandwidth as most applications require excessive amounts.

If you are connecting your laptop to mobile broadband it is usually as easy as signing up for a plan and then plugging in a USB modem or inserting a mobile broadband card.

The major players

In Australia, the major players in the mobile broadband market are Optus, Vodafone, 3 and Virgin Mobile. Telstra offers mobile broadband “cap” plans that go as high as $129* per month but generally start at around $50* per month. There are plans offered by 3 that start as low as $14.50* per month.

It’s best to compare prices and coverage before making a decision, as there can be hidden connection fees and some areas which aren’t serviced by certain networks.

* Prices/plans subject to change. Please contact the provider for more information.
